The Harvest Food Pantry is a small location with a very limited amount of storage room. Therefore, we ask that you please give through financial donations rather than physical grocery items. This helps to ensure that everyone receives equal support.
The best way that you can help support the work of the Harvest Food Pantry is to donate money. Funds raised are used to purchase items from the San Antonio Food Bank and at local grocery stores, where the Pantry gets a special discount. For example, a box of cereal that would cost over $2.00 at the grocery store can be purchased from the SAFB for about $0.20!
The Pantry does not take food donations for several other reasons: the Pantry operates out of a very small space, so we have to fill our shelves very carefully. When our once-a-month SAFB delivery comes, the room is filled to the brim! Also, the Pantry packs a very specific list of food items in the weekly grocery bags, based on a nutrition model that shows healthy choices for 4 meals, for a family of 5.
Depending on what is available from the SAFB, it costs about $25 to pack a bag for a family of 5. The retail cost of the bag is over $40! Every penny donated goes directly to the Harvest Pantry and into the grocery bags. Therefore, any amount donated will be used to feed families in need.
